I don’t like to be tethered to one place to work or write for too long. I go through phases. I’ll spend a few months working in my home office, then switch to a coffee shop for a period of time, and then maybe spend a week working from bed or the couch.
I need a change of scenery. It helps my creativity. Anyone else?
My latest nook has been my garage. Yes, my garage. My wife and I had a garage sale a few weekends ago, and there are a few pieces that didn’t sell. They include a couple really comfortable chairs. Couple that with the weather in Texas right now being perfect (70s and 80s, not 100s) and every morning I’ve been opening the garage door, plopping down in one of the unsold chairs, and camping out the entire day.
Why do I tell you that? Because that means every morning for the last two weeks, I’ve had a very particular view. That view involves the tree in my front yard: a young live oak. I take a lot of pauses when I write, which means I’ve spent a lot of time staring at this particular tree. Earlier this week, something hit me while staring at it. Something that I want you to take with you. Something I need to remember as well.
