Introducing: The "Confessions of a Christian Alcoholic" Podcast (Episode 1)
Real stories. Radical vulnerability. Remarkable comebacks.
“The world doesn’t need another podcast.”
That’s what I told myself after I got the idea for… another podcast. I had done several before, including a fun one last year called “That Was Stupid.” But to be honest, podcasts are hard work. And besides that, everyone seemingly has a podcast.
Do we really need another one, then?
The answer to that question, if I’m being honest, is: it depends. On what? Several things. But here’s what went into my decision.
Is there interest?
Is what I want my new podcast to be about unique?
Does God really want me to do it?
Here’s the short answer to all of those three: YES! Interest in sobriety is at an all-time high, I think having a candid conversation about alcohol and addiction from a Christian perspective—especially from the perspective of a Christian who became an alcoholic—is unique, and I God has made it clear it’s something I’m supposed to do.
So, here I am today announcing my new podcast, “Confessions of a Christian Alcoholic.” (It shares a title with my upcoming book.)
As we start this journey, I’d like to say a special thank you to LifeAudio, who has partnered with me to bring this podcast to life. LifeAudio’s parent company is behind such great sites as christianity.com and crosswalk.com, and they bring years of experience to the show. They saw something in this concept before anyone else did, so they were an easy choice to partner with.
So, what can you expect from “Confessions”? Well, here’s the show description:
Jon Seidl is the bestselling Christian author who became an alcoholic, not the other way around. It's usually the other way around. Or is it?
"Confessions of a Christian alcoholic" (based on the book by the same title) is all about real stories, radial vulnerability, and remarkable comebacks of people who have struggled with alcoholism and addictions of all sorts. The show features interviews with fellow addicts and alcoholics as well as professionals in the fields of trauma, faith, and addiction recovery. Because let's be honest, we're all addicted to something.
"Confessions" is a place for the desperate, the downtrodden, the destitute, and especially, the drunk. But it's also a place of hope and healing. Jon found sobriety after decades of struggling, but more importantly than finding sobriety he found Jesus. In every episode, he gets radically vulnerable as he explores what it looks like to be on this journey of messy sanctification.
In other words, this is a podcast all about real stories, radical vulnerability, and remarkable comebacks.
“So Jon, is it only a podcast for people who struggle with their relationship with alcohol?”
No! Certainly if you’ve struggled with alcohol, you’re curious about sobriety, or you want to explore what it would look like to cut back, then you’ll get a lot out of the podcast. But really, the show is for anyone who has/does/or will struggle with doing anything they don’t want to do. And isn’t that all of us?
If you agree, then you’ll enjoy the “Confessions of a Christian Alcoholic” podcast. I’ll release a new episode each Wednesday. It will be a good mix of interviews with fellow travelers/strugglers as well as clinicians and faith leaders. My hope is that A) you can see yourself in the stories, and B) you’ll be equipped to do something about it when you do.
How does that sound?
Upcoming guests include:
Alison Cook
Curt Thompson
Chuck DeGroat
Gina Birkemeier
And more!
In the inaugural episode, I start off by practicing what I preach: radical vulnerability. Episode one features my story of what I call misordered/disordered drinking. I give you the full details of being the Christian who became an alcoholic, not the other way around. While I’m not proud of it, my hope is that in hearing my story you’ll maybe hear elements of your own.
Every week, you’ll get the audio version for free. However, paid members also get access to the video version below. I hope you’ll join me each week and be encouraged. Because the truth is, we’re all on a journey of sanctification. And more often than people care to admit, it’s a messy one.
Welcome. You’re not alone. Let’s go on this journey together.
