Yesterday, a friend asked me to call them. They were struggling with something. So I placed my phone by the window in my office (where the reception is better), put my headphones in my ear, and started pacing around as the phone began ringing.
A few minutes into the conversation, this person asked me if I had any thoughts on how they could have a difficult conversation with their mom. Their mom was pushing for them to do something that made this person uncomfortable, but they didn’t know how to say “no.”
I thought about it for a second, remembered some of the difficult conversations I’ve had to have, and then offered some advice. After dispensing said advice, the person quickly responded.
“But she’s going to be so mad at me if I say that! I just can’t.”
Instead of arguing with this person, I simply asked a question: “Why does that matter?”
They asked a question of their own: “What do you mean?”
